This is an amazing scanner for the money. I thought I would have to do some editing of this pictures but was very happily surprised. I've been scanning a number of old black and white photos and the results were incredible. I was really surprised at how good these pictures turned out.I'm using a Macbook 2.4 GHz with 4 gigs of ram and running Mac OS 10.5.7. I'm starting with fairly good pictures, but some how they look better after they'd been scanned. Setup was easy and documents turned out very good as well.This scanned will meet most peoples home needs
This is an excellent scanner for someone who wants to archive old photos and slides. It is true it is a little on the slow side, but that is dependent on the dpi that is chosen for film and slides. The Digital ICE technology is pretty amazing and will save you time from having to edit little dust particles from your photos. Upgraded models have firewire capability so may be faster but the quality of the scanning on this model is excellent despite the slower speed.
The scans are okay, but the software has a cheesy look and feel to it, and Photoshop CS4 no longer uses TWAIN so it doesn't see it, unless you insert the plug-in by copying it. I just got this yesterday, and am surprised at the poor quality of the materials. Even then it may not see the scanner.It comes with Fine Reader, but for the Mac at least the version is not a full version. The section of the slide/negative holder for negatives could have a few teeth for 35mm film sprocket holes to ensure that negatives, particularly old ones that haven't been properly stored, are flat rather than buckled up. The document mat is easy to remove, but there are no really decent guides so that re-inserting it is a pain, and leads to frustration. I used a demo some years back, and if I recall correctly it could scan bilingual books (Latin-English) without difficulty. This will scan Latin, Greek, etc, but I don't think you can set it to scan Latin on one side and English on the other.
This scanner is a great investment. I've had Epson scanners for years and this one was a gift. I've had my Epson scanner for seven years and it's running strong.
Friends have recommended Epson scanners for years and now I know why. For years I struggled with my old scanner, my life ticking away as it slowly loaded, then over-loaded, froze.then finally produced a color cast image which I had to rework to make usable. No more.My new Epson 4490 Photo is fast and accurate with excellent color. Full featured and an excellent price. And Kudos to Amazon for an incredibly fast delivery.
